The Art of the Stopover…and Why a Business Class Traveler Should Care

There are many confusing terms in the travel industry – two of the most often misused concepts are a layover and a stopover. Broadly speaking, a layover means any connection between flights – this could be as short as 45 minutes or as long as just under 24 hours. In the context of international travel, stopover refers to a stay that exceeds 24 hours in a location that is not your final destination.

Adding a stopover may not only mean an opportunity to explore an additional city, but also a chance to save thousands on your flight tickets, while also accumulating valuable miles. We at CEOFlights are here to tell how to master the art of the stopover!

Let a Specialist Travel Agent Assist You

Booking an international first or business class flight ticket can be complicated enough, but planning a multi-city trip comes with an additional layer of potential challenges. A trip can be booked as a multi-city journey or even as separate flight tickets. On the seats in the business class cabin, often the difference may be measured in thousands of dollars.

Unfortunately, the online search engines don’t really allow for easy ways to evaluate the full set of options and compare the value afforded by each itinerary. While certainly it is possible to compare prices between multi-city journeys and completely separate tickets, it is not feasible to evaluate all practical combinations as even simple comparisons take a considerable amount of time (which none of us have!).

We at CEOFlights often receive calls from customers who have tried planning multi-city trips with stopovers on their own before turning to us for help. As specialists in complex business class itineraries, we are able to offer our clients better options often at a fraction of the prices advertised online on the major search engines.

See Two (or More!) Cities at Once

This is the major reason why many travelers consider a stopover. It is an excellent way to pack in multiple cities while you are on the road, especially if the desired locations are in a (relative!) proximity to one another. Also, the stopover may end up not costing you much more!

We at CEOFlights often see our customers focusing first on a roundtrip airfare and then, only as an afterthought, trying to add on a separate flight to a second destination. We recommend comparing this option with booking a multi-city journey from the beginning in order to get a better understanding as to what works best in terms of timing and value for money.

It Can Get Complicated – Plan in Advance

It is a great idea to see multiple cities during a single journey, and often you can add a stopover for limited additional funds. However, we advise that you plan well in advance in order to be able to evaluate the full array of options available to you and decide what is best for you.

While obviously there is no scientific cut-off as to what constitutes planning in advance, for multi-city journeys we recommend that you start reviewing your options at least 3 months in advance. Also, it is important to note that the flight will only be a portion of your journey – you will also need to figure out all other logistics of your trip, which do get more complex as you explore additional cities or even countries!
